What happens when a designer decides to transform her outdated, poorly laid out kitchen into a French Bistro-inspired space filled with style, charm and functionality, in just eight weeks?? Design Magic -that’s what!

When Justine announced to her family that she wanted to makeover her kitchen for the Fall 2023 One Room Challenge, a twice annual online event where designers, home bloggers, and diy-ers embark on completely re-designing a space in eight weeks, they were doubtful it could be done in such a short amount of time. But Justine knew that with her trusted team of tradespeople and all of the cabinets, appliances, fixtures and finishes lined up and ready for installation, she could make it happen.

Justine chose beautiful, inset cabinetry painted pale taupe with a classic yet interesting profile to evoke a Parisian bistro. She replaced the awkwardly situated island cooktop with a new, Italian induction range, and custom hood repositioning them along a wall where the walk-in pantry had previously stood, and relocated the new built-in pantry where a little-used built-in desk had been.

By redesigning the new island to be more compact, but also more functional than the old one, Justine was able to add an entire bank of new cabinets to a previously blank wall to create a “family command center”. She chose a deep, charcoal gray color for these cabinets, as well as the island, to provide contrast and interest.

Justine also opened up the kitchen by tiling the entire wall above the sink with charming patterned tiles, and replacing upper cabinets with open shelving. She used the same tiles to create a backsplash above the range.

With finishing touches like brass hardware, rattan barstools, and café curtains, Justine was able to make her dream of a French Bistro-Inspired kitchen a reality – and all within eight weeks!!
