Modern Elegance Dining Room

Great Falls, VA

Photography Mary Pat Collins What started as a nicely-sized, albeit slightly bland dining room, was transformed by Justine and her team into a space that is now elegant, detailed, and dramatic. This Dining Room, as well as the adjoining Butler’s Pantry, were taken from dull to dazzling in just six weeks for the Fall 2022 One Room Challenge! Justine started by adding architectural detailing and texture to the room with the application of fluted wall panels to chair rail height, a textured, paintable wallpaper above, and a horizontal brass beading strip on the wall between them. Both the upper and lower sections of the newly textured walls were then painted the same warm white shade, and a unique chandelier and wall sconces were added to give a warm ambiance to the room. Brass curtain rods and green velvet curtains bring a bit of drama and color, and work to accentuate the high ceilings. An existing vintage kilim rug and antique Chinese wedding cabinet were incorporated into the design to add more color and character to the room, while a new, black, oval dining table adds a modern edge to the furnishings. Vintage mahogany, cane chairs were reupholstered in a bright, yellow velvet, infusing yet another pop of fun, yet curated color, pulled from the vintage rug. Art and accessories were chosen with intention and restraint, so as to complement, but not overwhelm any of the other design elements. The final result is an elegant and modern dining room that is also highly functional, with plenty of space for storage, people, and entertaining!
